The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue
As any significant honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry for introducing of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and fill the hearts of followers with niche passions.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for board games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked completely that year
- Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game got ignored that year
- Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're small games, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier game development, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
