Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Soldiers Group

Since the launch of the fourth campaign, fresh DM the talented storyteller has kept viewers on edge with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of heroes, and a gripping narrative featuring celestial beings, evil spirits, and malevolent powers expanding in strength within Dol-Makjar.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season lie ahead.

The Warrior Group Unveiled

Episode 3 ended with a dramatic pause and revealed the first table of adventurers who will separate from the central cast to embark on their separate journey, separate from the other two tables.

The Soldiers table includes Teor Pridesire (played by the voice actor), the agile character (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan (Robbie).

The Reason for Division

With 13 cast members, it was obvious from the beginning that keeping everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Introduction, connecting the personal journeys before splitting into three separate parties: Warriors, Planners, and Explorers.

What Defines the Combat Party

As described by Brennan Lee Mulligan, the warrior group is for adventurers who prefer a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven narrative style where diplomatic options are rare.

Initially, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might appear unsuited, but the actions of the third episode make it clear why these particular heroes are best suited for the warrior group.

Reasons to Leave

To begin with, the party understands precisely where to go next after a violent opening clash with the antagonists.

An old friend of the deceased character—whose death kicked off the campaign’s events—used The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, invading the secret base, striking the rogue, and taking all the enchanted items to auction.

The traitor then settled his obligations and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in the northern region, above the city, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Personal Motivations

Additionally, each member has a personal reason to exit the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, seeks vengeance.
  • The adventurer has experience in the northern area and advises that it is a hostile place.
  • Tyranny and Wicander, having disobeyed his family’s wishes to kill the fighter and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
  • However, their status as key figures in House Halovar could assist the party access areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Additionally, The grateful character pledged a unbreakable promise to Wicander for his salvation and will now accompany him everywhere.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the authorities that govern Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making remaining behind no longer safe:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • Tyranny and The healer betrayed House Halovar and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by the family.

This leaves them little choice but to travel to the northern region in search of the antagonist.

Future Episodes

From episode three’s post-show segment, we discover that the Soldiers table will be absent next week, leaving the remaining eight participants to round up the Questers and Planners groups.

Audiences can look forward to discovering which adventurers will be in which group in the story’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on next week.
